When it comes to replacing missing teeth, most patients and dentists agree that there’s no better option than dental implants. Not only do they look, feel, and function just like natural teeth, but they often last a lifetime! Only about 5% of dental implants fail, which makes it a relatively uncommon occurrence. Nonetheless, it’s always a good idea to know what to expect in the unlikely event that you’re faced with dental implant failure in Estero. Read on to learn the basics of removing a failed dental implant.

The Process of Removing a Failed Dental Implant

First, your mouth will be thoroughly numbed to ensure your comfort during the procedure. In many cases, a patient will also use a form of sedation dentistry to make the process smoother. Once you’re numbed and at-ease, treatment will begin. If the dental implant was recently placed and hasn’t fused with the jawbone, there should be little trouble removing the implant. However, if the dental implant has been in the mouth for quite some time and has bonded with the jawbone tissue, the process will be slightly more complicated.

Your implant dentist will use advanced imaging software to plan out your treatment so that it is as easy and non-invasive as possible. In some cases, a small amount of tissue will need to be removed alongside the implant post, but your dentist will plan the procedure carefully to minimize this. In many cases, a bone graft will be performed right after dental implant removal. Bone tissue from elsewhere in your body or from a donor will be packed into the socket vacated by the failed dental implant. This will stimulate new bone tissue growth and preserve your chances of having the failed dental implant replaced.

When Can A New Dental Implant Be Placed?

You’ll no doubt be anxious to get another dental implant as soon as you can. It may be possible to have a new implant placed right away if there is no sign of infection or jawbone damage, and as long as there’s adequate jawbone density. However, this can only be done in certain situations. More often, a patient will need to undergo treatment to address whatever caused the dental implant failure in the first place. It will usually take a patient four to six months to recover from dental implant removal, at which point a new implant may be placed.

The best way to keep dental implant failure at bay is to practice great oral hygiene at home. If you notice any discomfort or swelling around your dental implant, contact your dentist right away! They may be able to perform dental implant salvage and keep your new smile intact.
